The spirit of Christmas, is the spirit of love & of generosity & of goodness.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and Christmas is on the near horizon. Nothing is better than spending time with the ones you love! Before we know it, we’ll be wrapping gifts, cooking for that feast our family talks about each year, throwing parties, and living it this festive season.
With that said, holidays can be pretty chaotic. With all the clutter that builds up, the waste that needs to be removed, and oh – where are you going to put all these new gifts? It’s probably about time to do a big sweep out and make room for the new. According to research completed by Stanford University, Americans throw away 25% more trash from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Mind-boggling. This amounts to 1 million tons per week during this time range. Can you imagine?
‘Tis the season… to go green!
Are you thinking about a New Year’s Resolution already? Let us give you one to consider. Start early and start now – start thinking about ways to cut down on unnecessary waste and what you can do to help save Mother Earth. Now, if you don’t have time or don’t think you can take impactful and proactive steps, there are simple ways to make a difference.
Holiday Shopping
Cut down on the wrapping paper and gift bags and instead, think of other ways to give a gift. This could be tickets to a concert, membership to a gym, a new pet, or a trip to the Bahamas (or maybe somewhere local, of course)! Shop around local businesses and support them. Most companies are starting to use organic and recyclable bags. If you want to wrap somewhat, try this, for example: You bought your wife a new purse. Instead of wrapping the entire thing, wrap a pretty bow around it and cut back on waste.
Decorations
We know that it’s tempting to toss out all of the decorations that you have used already this season. Maybe you want to change your theme for next year, perhaps. Instead, store those away to use for the next year. It’s a smart decision that will not only help the planet but will help your wallet, too. You know those bows you put around your kid’s presents under the tree? Utilize those and turn them into decorations around the house for next Christmas. If you do choose to upgrade your decorations, don’t throw your old ones out. Instead, donate them and give them a new loving home.
Reusing gift bags each year is a simple way to save money and waste. I’m sure some of you had witnessed your parents doing this when you were a child. Also, did you know some wrapping paper is organic? Check out the different options next time you go Christmas shopping and see the different recycled wrapping papers. You won’t be able to tell the difference.
Parties & Gatherings
Let’s face it – plastic sucks. With so many natural options out there for taking care of our planet, plastic should be a thing of the past by now. If you have plastic bags at home, take them to local retail stores and encourage recycling this way, not in a recycling bin or the trash. For more information, check out recycling in Memphis, TN, for good tips and details on getting started.
When it comes to Amazon boxes (who doesn’t love online shopping?) and other cardboard boxes, be sure to break those down the best you can. These are super easy to recycle at your own home.
Recycling is easy. If you haven’t signed up for it at your residence yet, be sure to. Always be sure to put the right things in your bins, and avoid things such as light bulbs, Christmas tree lights, bubble wrap, plastic in general, and hazardous materials. We want to keep the environment safe, along with waste management workers. They are essential and do hard work!
